Social media giant Instagram released a new feature on June 20 known as "IGTV." Instagram recently hit 1 billion global users since its launch in 2010.
IGTV is a built in feature to Instagram for watching long-form, vertical video from Instagram creators. IGTV also acts as a stand-alone app.
The videos on IGTV play full screen on your phone and are not limited to the one minute length like on Instagram; instead, IGTV videos can be up to an hour long. The feature works just like turning on the TV, where videos from users you follow automatically appear and begin playing without having to search for them. You can also discover more by switching between "For You," "Following," "Popular," and "Continue Watching."
IGTV also has channels which are hosted by creators. When you follow a creator on Instagram, their IGTV channel will show up for you to watch. Anyone can be a creator — you can upload your own IGTV videos in the app or on the web to start your own channel.
Video is king in all digital media because it is the easiest way for our brains to consume information. We would rather watch than read and would rather watch a handmade tutorial rather than follow step-by-step images. Nothing is wrong with this switch in receiving information; it is simply how media has adapted to how we actually want to receive our information!
IGTV is available on Android and iOS. You can learn more by visiting the Instagram Help Center.
